Genogram Links
General Purpose Software
Microsoft Word can do basic drawing. On the Drawing toolbar you'll find
square and round shapes and lines for connecting them. You can also include
text via text boxes. But, for anything more than the simplest genogram,
you'll find Word not up to the task.
Drawing / Diagramming Software
SmartDraw appears to be a powerful
package (I've not tried it myself). It has won many awards including the PC Magazine and ZDNet
awards. It can be used specifically to draw genograms.
You can download a free 30-day trial copy, after which it will cost
you $69 to register. (This is a large program, 2.85 MB, so you'll want a fast
connection for the download.)
Edge
Diagrammer is another diagramming package. It also has won some awards.
You can download a free 30-day trial version after which the developer asks
you to register ($29.95 for students).

Genogram Software
Genogram Maker
- This program was developed by Randy
Gerson, one of the authors of Genograms in Family Assessment. This is
the most powerful special purpose genogram program I know of. Fortunately,
Genogram Maker is
available in the Harris Library (machine #16 in
the computer lab, and the two machines at sit-down stations on the 3rd floor), and the user
manual is at the reserve desk. Take along a diskette, and save your work
frequently, as you'll find the program has bugs in it and will sometimes exit
and lose your work.
Note: To draw a dotted line indicating a non-married intimate relationship go
to the Pen menu, select Pen Style, and then select Dotted.
Ecotivity and Relativity -
Another genogram program. This company also has an ecomap package
available. Unless they've upgraded in the past several years, their software is
not as well developed as Genogram Maker.

does the concept of "triangulation" come from? Well, check out Murray Bowen's writings for a
